Extreme heat has various effects on our body e.g. with our sleeping pattern, digestion and immunity. Facing too much heat wave may invite fatigue, dehydration and sometimes fever.

TwingTwing brings you the best advice around the globe to get away from the scorching heat and beat the heat wave.

1. Feel the Freezer burn

Stick sheets in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes before bed. We recommend placing them in a plastic bag first (unless eu de frozen pizza is your fave aromatherapy scent). Granted, this won’t keep you cool all night, but it will provide a brief respite from heat and humidity.

2. Keep your fan out in the night.

When your fan is facing out the window, it blows hot air out of the room, which his replaced by cold air from outside. As the cold air comes in, the temperature will drop. It's best if you have another window to open elsewhere so you can get a cross draft going too.

 3. Get low.

Hot air rises, so set up your bed, hammock, or cot as close to the ground as possible to beat the heat. In a one-story home, that means hauling the mattress down from a sleeping loft or high bed and putting it on the floor. If you live in a multi-floor house or apartment, sleep on the ground floor or in the basement instead of an upper story.

 4. Hang out.

Cool down a whole room by hanging a wet sheet in front of an open window. The breeze blowing in will quickly bring down the room’s temperature.

5. Stay away from the stove.

Summer is not the time to whip up a piping hot casserole or roast chicken. Instead, chow down on cool, room-temperature dishes (salads are clutch) to avoid generating any more heat in the house. If hot food is in order, fire up the grill instead of turning on the oven. And swap big meals for smaller, lighter dinners that are easier to metabolize. The body produces more heat after you chow down on a huge steak than a platter of fruits, veggies, and legumes.

6. Encourage cold feet.

Those ten little piggies are pretty sensitive to temperature because there are lots of pulse points in the feet and ankles. Cool down the whole body by dunking (clean!) feet in cold water before hitting the hay. Better yet, keep a bucket of water near the bed and dip feet whenever you’re feeling hot throughout the night.

7. Stay away from the red meat

Don't eat large, protein-rich meals that can increase metabolic heat and warm the body

8. Drink More Water

You know how important it is to stay hydrated all year round. When you’re sweating a lot, either because of exercise or the summer heat, drinking enough water becomes even more important. As the CDC suggests, think of your body like an air conditioner:
Whenever your body heats up from physical activity or the hot weather outside, your internal air conditioner turns on and you begin to sweat. And remember, now that your air conditioner is using its coolant (your sweat), it is important to refill the tank — by drinking lots of H2O.

8. Take care of your pets this summer

Finally, remember that pets also suffer when the temperature rises. Cooling animals (dogs, rabbits, cats) by giving them a "cool" bath or shower will help keep their body temperature down. A cool towel on a tile floor to lay on, a cool towel or washcloth laying over the skin next to a fan will also help cool the animal. Make sure they have plenty of cool water to drink as well. Signs of a heatstroke in a pet are:

  • rapid panting,
  • wide eyes,
  • hot skin,
  • twitching muscles,
  • a dazed look.
  • Call your vet if you think your pet has a heat stroke.
And an appeal from TwingTwing

Keep a bowl of water in and around your balcony or open spaces so that the sparrows and the small birds can survive this heatwave.
