So many street protests and even then the Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi was severely criticized for his open thoughts about technology and Innovation. However, over a period of time, computers have generated more jobs than any other tools/peripheral.

India, Post independence was known as a land of snake charmers to the world. We were under-developed for many years.
Today, in terms of growth percentage, GDP, Per Capita Income, health, sanitation we are nowhere compared to the other countries who got freedom at the same time like Israel in 1948, Malaysia in 1957 and Singapore in 1961.
The effect has got many arms to blame. This is also true for the year 1947-1991 that we were struggling to reform economy, making truces with Pakistan and China, handling internal civil war. Our economy growth got damaged because of unprecedented wars, emergency and internal caste-religion driven politics which is still continuing.

India, post liberalization(1991) has evolved as a center of cheap labors. It extended its arms for more liberal business and invited countries for doing business in India to improve economy.

The education and the opportunity to work in private sectors were so low at that time that people perceived someone as privileged who were working class. Government Jobs were too easy to get into.
Grass was greener on the other side!
Everyone (even if they are not financially capable) wanted their kids to go for higher education and do the private jobs. So,when computers got introduced in India at a broader level, it created hype in terms of better life, high income and social security. Parents started feeling proud if they see their children working on computers or painting on Paint Brush tool in early 2000s.

It was also an era when computers actually started creating impacts and the attention started shifting towards IT industry. Since beginning, India has always been a center of cheap labors and resources. India became the outsourcing service destination for cheap labors, resources and hardworking humanoids in the world, where they can delegate all the work and be a controlling nation at their side.
The ruckus in the certain demand created the huge job opportunity for Indians. People from any field, any domain getting recruited in the system. Well, we can not blame the IT demand alone, it is that we were not having great job opportunities and unemployment was soaring all time high. This high job opportunity demanded skilled IT engineers which led to open many engineering colleges in India.
